As one of the 6,500 clubs which make up the General Federaton of Women's Clubs, the KWC is part of an international orgzanization of community-based volunteer women's clubs dedicated to community service. The GFWC was organized in 1890 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The state organization, the GFWC-NC is headquartered in Raleigh. The KWC received its official charter in 1935. Two years later clubmembers decided to purchase the Peebles House on King Street, the same building now known as Harmony Hall. ![]() With a $2,000 fundraising effort, a $3,000 bank loan and a $600 loan from a clubmember, the KWC became owners of the Peebles House. Because many repairs were needed at the time of the purchase, the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners and the Kinston City Council each donated $300 toward repairs. For 15 years the building was used as a library. When the library relocated in 1952, additional repair work was necessary. Renovations were completed in July 1954 and the Peebles House was open to the public for meetings, wedding receptions and other events. Research by a clubmember uncovered that the building may have been owned by Richard Caswell, the first governor of North Carolina and it had been known as Harmony Hall. In 1975 the club deeded "Harmony Hall' to the Lenoir County Historical Association. It has since been developed as an historical site and is home to the KWC's monthly meetings. |
